Oakland County Board of Commissioners Launches Free Rx Discount Card

The Oakland County Board of Commissioners announced during a press conference on Thursday, April 18, that the county has adopted the Coast2Coast Rx discount prescription card as a health resource for area constituents. The free card is designed to help consumers save money on their prescriptions and other health care services while contributing to the community as well—each time the card is used to fill a prescription, $1.25 is generated for public programs.

“We chose the Coast2Coast Rx program to be Oakland County’s discount prescription card because it will allow us to address both the health and financial concerns of individual residents and it is a fiscally-responsible way for the Board of Commissioners to provide a valuable public service for our constituents,” said Commissioner Michael Gingell, chairman of the Board of Commissioners.

As a no-cost, comprehensive program, Coast2Coast Rx provides savings of up to 75 percent on thousands of prescriptions and additional health services. The card has no restrictions on eligibility, so all residents are immediately qualified to use it regardless of their age, income, health or insurance status.

These features allow the card to achieve its purpose of helping consumers save money and allowing consumers to better manage their health through more affordable options on health care services. “This is a great step in helping meet the health needs of county residents,” explained Commissioner David Woodward of District 19, who was unable to attend the press conference but expressed the Board’s bipartisan support beforehand. ‘We will continue to look at expanding existing programs and developing new services that improve health care in Oakland County.”

Commissioner Jim Runestad of White Lake Township agreed that Coast2Coast Rx’s service prompted the Oakland County Board of Commissioners to join about 300 governmental entities nationwide that have endorsed the program. “This is a wonderful opportunity for Oakland County because there is no additional work required of county personnel to administer or market the program, allowing them to focus on their important existing roles,” said Commissioner Runestad. “The discount card program is one more way that the Board of Commissioners strives to increase the efficiency of our operations and helps to improve the quality of life in our community.”  

The card offers discounts on more than 60,000 brand name drugs at 59,000+ participating pharmacies, including most major chains and many independent establishments. Through partner programs, the card can also be used for discounts on diabetes supplies, pet prescriptions and some veterinary care, and services such a lab and imaging, and vision, dental and hearing care. Although the card is not intended to replace an insurance plan, it can provide access to the prescriptions and health care services that uninsured or underinsured consumers may need; and even those with insurance can use the card to help offset the cost of high deductibles. In some cases the card can help relieve the out-of-pocket costs of the Medicare Part D “donut hole."
