Mini (Desserts) Are In

Want to have a crowd-pleasing food item for all? Consider the options provided by miniature desserts. And think about some of the summertime themes you can use!

Miniature desserts are one of the latest trends in specialty foods today. Those looking to cut calories embrace these small, “tiny treats” because you can still indulge in your sweet craving but keep your intake in moderation – at least that’s the theory.

After all, who can resist cute little versions of our favorite goodies? They are so darn fun to eat and also look great on any party table.

I began to make these miniature desserts for friends, family members and co-workers for birthday parties, graduations, showers and more. I soon found there was a large demand for these tiny treats, going so far as replacing the traditional slice of cake.

Miniature desserts today include everything from mini cupcakes to treats on a stick - cake pops, brownie pops and the new “push up cakes” a.k.a. “cake shooters”…cake layered with frosting in a clear plastic push up container…do you remember orange push up popsicles?  People are opting for dessert buffets at their gatherings, which offer guests the opportunity to sample a variety of bite-sized desserts instead of just one larger dessert.

So get your creative juices flowing and try making some miniature goodies for your Memorial Day gatherings, graduation parties, and Mother’s and Father’s Day celebrations.

TASTY TIP: Here’s an idea to get you started thinking for Memorial Day/Fourth of July…make your favorite brownie recipe and once cooled, use a star shaped cookie cutter to cut the brownies and drizzle with white frosting.

To do this place any store bought or homemade vanilla frosting in a ziplock bag, warm in the microwave slightly and then snip a small corner of the bag and drizzle onto your brownie.   If you are feeling adventurous you can add red or blue food coloring to your frosting. Add decorative sprinkles and serve on a pretty platter or plate and you are all set!
