'Dr. Evil' Will Appeal His 45-Year Jail Sentence

Dr. Farid Fata was sentenced in July after pleading guilty to health-care fraud by ordering unnecessary cancer treatments for patients.

Dr. Farid Fata—the Oakland County oncologist known as “Dr. Evil” after prescribing medically unnecessary cancer treatments for more than 550 former patients, some who were never sick—will be appealing his 45-year federal prison sentence, according to a Daily Tribune report.

The appeal notice was filed this week in Detroit federal court, and the case will be heard in Cincinnati, the report stated.

Fata, 50, was arrested in 2013 after being accused of defrauding Medicare by ordering unnecessary treatments for patients. In some cases, the patients weren’t even ill.

In July, Fata was sentenced after he pleaded guilty to 13 counts of health-care fraud, two counts of money laundering and conspiring to pay and receive kickbacks in September. Fata billed insurance companies $34 million for unnecessary services to his patients and received $17.6 million, which he has agreed to forfeit.
