Highland Florist Helps Pick for Flowers for All Occasions

Matthew Rubin of the Flower Factory shares his advice for buying the perfect flowers.

From birthdays to sick days, anniversaries to apologies, there is always a reason to give flowers, but sometimes the question is which ones?

“You can’t go wrong with flowers,” said Matthew Rubin, a florist at The Flower Factory in Highland.

Rubin has been helping customers with their flower buying decisions for more than 20 years and says he is used to taking customers through a step by step process when trying to decide what flowers would perfectly fit their needs.

Colors, style and occasion are all important factors, according to Rubin, but sometimes, there are times where the concept of less is more is the best option.

“Going to visit the parents for the first time, I would just bring a wrapped bouquet, something mixed,” he said. “Yes, you want your first impression to be good, but you don’t want to over do it and make them (girlfriend) look bad.”

As for the apology flowers, Rubin says he has seen many men over the years rushing in to buy two, three or even four bouquets of roses, but admits sometimes flowers may not be enough depending on what they are apologizing for.

“It’s always roses,” he said with a grin. “I don’t know roses to be that apologetic. How about you bring her a bouquet and take her out to eat or get her a membership to a spa and send flowers to the spa.”
