It's Time to Enroll in Summer Camp

A selection of summer camps in or near your Patch community.

With the choice and variety of summer camps available in southeastern Michigan, boredom won't be an option this summer for your kids. A lot of organizations, from the YMCA to your local parks and recreation department offer dozens of choices for camps, with science, reading, sports, music and more among them. Whether you're looking for an all-around experience or a camp more focused on a particular interest, this list features a few in your town or one very close by. Feel free to add your own, as well:

White Lake

Location: Clarkston
Name: Stars & Stripes Kids Activity Center
Type of camp: General variety
Cost: Varies on the type of camp
Where: 4630 White Lake Road, Clarkston
When: Different sessions throughout the summer
Deadline for registration: Registration is available until camps are full.
Details: Over 30 camps are offered at the Kids Activity Center, for all different age groups and plenty with multiple one week sessions. Check the website for the full roster, which includes a Lego camp, NASCAR camp and an American Girls camp, among others.

Location: White Lake
Name: Haverhill Farms
Type of camp: Horse riding
Cost: $425 per two week session
Where: 2986 McKeachie Road, White Lake
When: Five 2-week sessions from June 20 to Aug. 26
Deadline for registration: Registration is available up until camp starts.
Details: Haverhill Farms provides a daily camp for children to get riding lessons and to learn horse and stable management. An informal horse show and pizza party concludes the camp and give the kids a chance to show off what they’ve learned.

Location: Waterford
Name: Wakeboard Clinic
Type of camp: Water sports
Cost: $325 a week
Where: 4300 Cass Lake Road, Waterford
When: The week of June 6 to the week of Aug. 29
Deadline for registration: Registration is available until camp fills up, but they prefer people to register one to two weeks before each session starts.
Details: This camp is perfect for first-timers to get their first taste of wakeboarding, water skiing and other water sports. There are half-day and full-day sessions that run Monday through Thursday. There are also sleep away camps offered by the same company, but at their northern Michigan location in Boyne Falls.

Location: White Lake
Name: British Soccer Camp

Cost: Depends on choice of camp
Where: White Lake Middle School, 1450 Bogie Lake Road, White Lake
When: June 20-24
Deadline for registration: None listed, but there is a $10 per player late fee if applications are received within 10 days or fewer of the program starting.
Details: The British Soccer Camp promises to provide “players of all ages and abilities with the rare opportunity to receive high-level soccer coaching from a team of international experts.” Four different camps, for ages 3 to 14 are listed.

Location: White Lake
Name: Huron Valley Recreation & Community Education

Details: The flyers for the different camps are at the link above. The Summer Experience camp provides academic adventures, weekly field trips and music video making for students who have completed kindergarten up to age 12. The Summer Valley camp caters to preschool children.

Dexter

Location: Ann Arbor
Name: Rocks and Robots Camp
Type of camp: Outdoor activities and science

Details: This unique camp combines working with and building robots with rock climbing and other physical outdoor activities. Ages accepted range from 6 to 15.

Details: The Ann Arbor Area Piano Teachers Guild sponsors this creative camp that lets kids both explore and play different types of music and instruments. There are two different camps, one for kids grades 1-7 and a younger group for pre-K kids.

Name: iD Tech Camps

Details: iD Tech Camps is a national program offering a wide variety of computer and technology-related camps, ranging from game design to film production. The University of Michigan location features both day and overnight camps.

Location: Brighton
Name: Midcourse Correction
Type of camp: For at-risk youth
Cost: $425
Where: Actual camp is located at 10359 East Farrand, Otisville, MI 48463 (North of Flint). Offices are in Brighton.
When: Varies, there are multiple weekend-long sessions throughout the summer.
Deadline for registration: Registration available up to the Thursday before each weekend camp.
Details: From their website:

Details: This YMCA-affiliated camp includes a wide variety of both residential camps and day camps, usually not lasting more than a week at a time. The day camps include a specialty category that allows children to have a better in-depth experience in a field they enjoy, including fishing, sports and nature exploration. West Bloomfield

Details: The Parks and Recreation department features multitudes of camps on a daily basis from June 20 to Sept. 2. Art and performance, nature, sports and science camps are all represented, and one of the highlights is the “It’s Great To Be Grand Camp,” for kids and their grandparents.
