Lakeland Girls Compete in 9th Annual Carrie Saxton-Woods Soccer Invitational

Coach said he's eager to start season.

Lakeland High School Girls Soccer teams participated in the ninth annual Carrie Saxton-Woods 2011 Soccer Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

Lakeland's varsity team was one of 42 varsity teams who took part in the memory of Saxton-Woods who died from cancer in January 2004.

The Lady Eagles participated in three scrimmages on Saturday at Lakeland, and the junior varsity Lady Eagles played in two scrimmage games on Friday. A total of 103 scrimmage games were held at seven high school sites across the area.

Coach Kurt Whitefield begins his sixth year at the helm of the team, and said he was excited to get an early look at his squad, which has three seniors, eight juniors, five sophomores and two freshmen. The first game of the season for the Eagles will be Thursday at South Lyon starting at 7:00 p.m.
