Lakeland Golfers Hope to Beat the Heat at Regionals
Young Eagles hope to improve upon district performance at regionals Thursday in Wixom.

Lakeland’s golf team wasn’t at its best last week at Dunham Hills but a team score of 320 helped the Eagles advance to the state regionals held Thursday at Lyon Oaks Golf Course in Wixom.
Freshman Jake Kneen led the way for Lakeland, finishing in a third-place tie with a 75 at the Highland Township golf course. Alex Kleckner shot 78 and Justin Pahl and Joey Lepkowski shot 83 and 84 respectively for the Eagles.
All of Lakeland’s individual golfers, including senior Ty Bouwens, will have a chance to qualify individually for the state finals at Lyon Oaks Thursday as well. The lowest three individual scores from any team that does not advance to the state finals can also qualify. There are 57 teams overall that qualify for the state finals and three out of 12 teams competing at Lyon Oaks will advance.

“I thought we looked a little tired, (as) two of our players were five over par on their last two holes,” said Lakeland head coach Hugh Felt. “Those are the kind of mistakes we hope to correct for regionals. Everyone needs their 'A' game for the team to (advance).”
It will not be an easy feat. A number of state champions have advanced from this regional in the past. Top opponents this year will include Birmingham Brother Rice, Novi Catholic Central, North Farmington and Pinckney. With very hot temperatures expected the two days leading up to Thursday’s regional and high 70s and sun expected for Thursday, weather conditions are expected to be optimal for low scores.

“We’re young (with three freshmen among the top five to six players) but I feel we can compete with anyone,” Felt said.
