Lakeland Softball Ousts Fenton 3-1
On the road to another District Championship, the Lakeland softball team notched a win against Fenton.
The softball team ousted Fenton 3-1 in a thrilling district game Saturday. It was a pitchers duel between Fenton’s Sammi Cowger and Lakeland’s Selena Hicks through the first 5 innings.
Fenton got on the scoreboard in the 5th as Brooklyn Sondgeroth scored on a Lakeland throwing error.
The Eagles came back in the top of the 6th as Sierra Burke lined a single to left. She stole second base and went to third after a strikeout when the catcher dropped the ball. Burke scored on a passed ball to tie the game at 1-1.

In the top of the 7th Burke singled to right field. After Hannah Szajner was hit by the pitch, Burke stole third. Morgan Craft grounded out to 1st to drive in Burke with the winning run. Szajner scored on a passed ball to make the final 3-1 for the Eagles.
Selena Hicks got the win for Lakeland giving up just three hits. Catcher Sierra Burke lead the Eagle hitters with two hits and two stolen bases. Sammi Cowger pitched a strong game for Fenton giving up only three hits. Fenton wrapped up the season with a 26-14 record. With the win, Lakeland advanced to the district championship game.

Lakeland shut out cross town rival Milford 7-0 later in the day Saturday. Selena Hicks and Anika Wiesinger combined on a one-hitter to lead the Eagles to the district championship. Karrisa Gawronski had three hits for the Eagles while Madison Burgess and Kelly Merkle each had two hits. The Eagles banged out 11 hits as they won their 8th district championship in the last 9 years.
Lakeland takes there 33-5 record to the Hartland regional next Saturday where they will play Troy Athens at 10 a.m.
