Recycled Prom Dress Project, Huron Valley

The Huron Valley Green Team is collecting gently used prom dresses to distribute to girls in need at the Huron Valley Earth Day Festival.

Wanted Gently Used, Clean Prom Dresses

Huron Valley’s Green Team is collecting prom dresses for girls in need. My daughter Alyssa and I have taken over the project this year from Yvonne Peak.

Peak, a Milford resident, started this out reach program several years ago while volunteering at Highland’s Community Sharing. Four years ago it became part of the Huron Valley Earth Day Festival. It’s a great recycling and outreach program.

My daughter and I helped sort the dresses last year and hang them up by size at the YMCA. It was very rewarding to watch so many young women shop and take home lovely gowns that they could not afford to purchase themselves.

Last year 400 dresses were donated and we hope to collect 400 more this year. Purses, shoes and jewelry will also be accepted. Some local retailers are participating in the project; The Clothing Cove, Uptown Threads, and Bling have all donated dresses this year. Many local families have dropped off dresses at the YMCA in Milford as well.

The dresses will be distributed at the Huron Valley Earth Day Festival on April 26th at the Carls Family YMCA in Milford. Two tailors have volunteered to do minor alterations on the day of the festival, more extensive alterations can be done for a fee.

Dresses and accessories will be accepted now through April 12th at the Carls Family YMCA in Milford (300 Family Drive).
