White Lake's Alpine Valley, Other Southeast Michigan Ski Slopes Open Early
Slopes at Mount Brighton, Mount Holly, Alpine Early and Pine Knob get a gift from an early start to winter.

Get those skis waxed. Southeast Michiganβs ski resorts are opening early.
βItβs crazy early,β Taylor Ogilvie, general manager of Mount Brighton, told The Detroit News. βAny time we can get open before Thanksgiving, itβs kind of a gift. Weβre just lucky with the weather right now.β
The βgiftβ is an early start to winter, which has brought heavy snowfalls Up North and chilly temperatures in the lower peninsula that allow the resorts to kick their snow-making apparatus into high gear.

Usually, an early start occurs during the first week in December.
βThis kind of colder weather this early gets people geared up for skiing,β said Mickey MacWillams, executive director of the Michigan Snowsports Industries Association in Clarkston.

βItβs also good for retailers,β he said. βEven if (the weather) doesnβt hold up all the way through, itβs nice to have something like this to begin. People begin to think about outdoor activities when itβs cold.β
