Man Shot, Killed After Charging Officers With Box Cutter In Wayne County: Police

ECORSE, MI — A man was shot and killed after charging officers with a box cutter Thursday night in metro Detroit, according to police.

The incident happened at 8:15 p.m. Thursday at 4235 High Street near Drouillard Road and Seminole Street in Ecorse, according to police.

Officers responded to a domestic violence assault in the area when they found a woman bleeding heavily from cut wounds, according to police.

While officers were treating the woman, a 37-year-old man returned to the area with a box cutter, according to police.

He refused to drop the box cutter and an officer tased him, according to police.

The man fell to the ground but quickly got back up and charged an officer while still holding the box cutter, according to police.

That's when an officer fatally shot the man, according to police.

The woman was taken to a nearby hospital where her condition was unknown, according to police.

There were no other injuries in the incident.

Police were still investigating the shooting, which was one of two involving police Thursday night in metro Detroit.

A man was also shot and killed by officers Thursday night in Oakland County, according to police.

"Anytime our officers are forced to make split-second decisions involving an armed individual, it is a serious and unfortunate situation for everyone involved," Ecorse Police Chief Derran Shelby said. "Our primary concern at this time is the safety and well-being of the victim, the officers, and the community."
