WYANDOTTE, MI — A man suspected to have killed his mother in Wyandotte fatally shot himself during a traffic stop with Toledo police on Sunday, according to police.
The 67-year-old woman called 911 and reported a domestic dispute with her son at 6:20 p.m. Saturday at a home in the 800 block of Sixth Street near Goddard Road and Biddle Avenue in Wyandotte, according to police.
Officers went to the home and knocked on the door, but police said no one answered. Additionally, police said the house was quiet and the shades were pulled down, and the officers couldn't see inside the home.
Since the officers did not have a warrant to force their way into the home, they tried to reach the caller by phone but were unsuccessful, according to police.
Police received another call hours later at 3:15 a.m. Sunday that sent officers back to the same house. This time they went inside and found the 67-year-old woman shot to death with multiple gunshot wounds, according to police.
Investigators identified the woman's 41-year-old son as the primary suspect. They also noticed the woman's vehicle was missing from the home's driveway.
Investigators checked Flock license plate reader cameras, which showed the vehicle traveling westbound on Goddard Road away from the home minutes after the initial 911 call, according to police.
"Based on the information we now have, it appears the suspect murdered the victim at the time of the 911 call," police said in a statement.
Investigators tried tracking the man's phone, but police said it was turned off.
By 10 a.m. Sunday, Flock license plate reader cameras in Toledo captured the vehicle entering the city, according to police.
The cameras caught the vehicle moving north, leading investigators to believe the man was returning to Michigan.
As Wyandotte officers prepared to intercept the vehicle at the state border, a Toledo police officer spotted the man pulling into a parking lot, according to police.
The officer tried to arrest the driver, but police said the man pulled out a handgun and fatally shot himself.
Investigators confirmed the weapon in the man's possession was the same caliber as the shell casings found at the scene of his mother's murder.
Police did not release the names of the victim or suspect, citing respect for the family.
