Did you celebrate May Day in style?

After stepping out on this beautiful May Day, in my heart I felt like this young woman tripping down the tree-lined path, in a regal purple flowing gown and hair adorned with flowers. But, in reality I was traversing the neighborhoods where healthy crops of wild violets threaded through the now-brilliant green grass and the deep purple hyacinths were giving the crocuses and snowdrops a run for their money.

As for the tulips … well, they’re still getting there.

I checked out my own backyard when I returned from my walk this morning. I was in search of lilacs, but they are still in bud. The beautiful clematis blooms are likewise still entrapped in their green bud jackets and have yet to emerge. Patience … just a little while longer.

But, what has appeared on the scene and raised their ugly heads, are the dandelions. I believe I saw hundreds of those bright yellow weeds dotting the homeowners’ lawns – mine included. Not that I am complaining, because perhaps it means that Spring has finally settled in and the warm weather is here for good. For years I would agonize over the arrival of those pesky dandelions. I’d tackle them by stabbing and grabbing them by the roots with a vengeance, all the while using my “Weed Hound” weeding gizmo, but, it seemed like I’d turn around and a half-dozen new ones sprouted up in their stead. It was endless and hopeless, ‘til they went to seed and blew away.

So, I’ve learned to co-exist in this world with dandelions outdoors and dust bunnies in the house, and now I just put blinders on when I head on out for a stroll.

Life is short … let the dandelions and dust bunnies linger longer.
