Wyandotte Elementary Students Learn Reading, Writing in Small Groups with New Self-Paced Program

A new English language arts curriculum, based on the book "The Daily 5," allows for Wyandotte elementary students to learn independently and for teachers to focus on small groups.

A new method of teaching English language arts has been implemented in all four Wyandotte elementary schools this year.

A curriculum adapted from the book, The Daily 5, allows students to work independently while small groups are given instruction by the teacher.

While working independently, the students have five literacy tasks to complete–reading to self, reading with someone, writing, word work and listening to reading.

third-grade teacher Crystal Eskin headed the project. She said the students' independent work, along with small group lessons, allows for the kids to learn at their own level and pace, which is something parents have been happy about.

“The parent feedback has been positive since the students are doing work that is not too hard or too easy for them,” Eskin said.

The Daily 5 program began last year in some elementary classrooms, but was implemented districtwide at the start of this school year.

Eskin worked this summer with teachers Susan McKenney, Mary Karoub, Maria Lanstra and Dawn Lee to analyze district resources and ensure everything was in place for the program to work.

The group also developed an ELA curriculum binder for all elementary teachers, which they presented at Tuesday night's board of education meeting.

Eskin said a major reason why the Daily 5 program has been successful is that the curriculum gives students a sense of empowerment.

“It’s been a really powerful way for students to take ownership of their learning,” Eskin said.
