Wyandotte Man Recovering from Motorcycle Crash

Friends of Bryan Smith are hosting a fundraiser to help him recover from injuries that are still keeping him in critical condition.

Last week, Wyandotte resident Bryan Smith was the passenger on a motorcycle involved in a high-speed accident that left the motorcyclist dead. Smith, who lives with his girlfriend and daughter, escaped alive, but he has no medical insurance.

In the face of medical bills and an inability to work, Smith is lucky to have the friends he has.

Frank Loor, a friend of "Smitty," along with other friends of Smith have taken Smith's predicament upon their shoulders, creating a Facebook page about Smith and hosting a fundraiser for him.

"A couple of us got together, we met in the hospital ... I told (Smith's girlfriend) I would do anything possible. I looked at him and the condition he was in, I couldn't help but cry and try to be strong," Loor said. "But with the picture of his daughter right next to (Smith) I knew we had to do something to help him out."

Currently the Facebook page created for Smith is promoting a fundraiser—with music, food and auctions—at on Aug. 12 with a $10 cover charge for adults and a $5 for children.

"We just want to prepare for everything for her and the child to make sure they (will be) taken care of," Loor said.

Presently the event has more than 200 people attending on Facebook, but within 30 minutes of the page's creation, Loor said about 100 people were already listed as attending.

"It's a beautiful thing honestly," he said. "It's crazy how it's just become such a huge event."

According to myfoxdetroit.com, the accident took place at the intersection of Ecorse and Beech Daily in Taylor and occurred with such force that the motorcycle was embedded into the car and the driver and Smith were flung from the bike.

Loor said Smith is in critical condition with broken bones in his face, adding that he can't talk or eat. Myfoxdetroit.com added that neither Smith nor the driver of the motorcycle were wearing helmets during the crash.

Nonetheless, Loor said Smith is fortunate.

"He didn't suffer any kind of damage to his spine, which is unbelievable," he said. "I think an angel was definitely looking out for him."
