2020 Census Results: 35 MN Counties Lost Population
Minnesota's population grew since 2010, but 35 rural counties actually lost population.
MINNESOTA — Minnesota's population grew to more than 5,700,000 in 2020, a 7.6 percent increase since 2010, according to the data released by the United States Census Bureau Thursday.
However, 35 of Minnesota's counties — all of them rural — lost population over the same 10 year period.
Kooching County experienced the worst drop-off of all, with its population falling from 13,311 in 2010 to 12,062 in 2020.

These nine counties lost more than five percent of their populations:
- Traverse County: 5.6 percent
- Norman County: 6 percent
- Murray County: 6.3 percent
- Renville County: 6.4 percent
- Lake of the Woods County: 7 percent
- Lac qui Parle County: 7.4 percent
- Kittson County: 7.6 percent
- Yellow Medicine County: 8.7 percent
- Kooching County: 9.4 percent
