Soap Dumped In Duluth Fountain Leads To Citation, $3,000 Cleanup

DULUTH, MN — Someone dumped soap into the Fountain of the Wind in Canal Park on Aug. 1, triggering a police response and a cleanup that cost the city about $3,000, according to the Duluth Police Department.

A Duluth Police officer has since identified and cited a 20-year-old Hermantown man, Travis Sundberg, for public nuisance in connection with the incident, police said in an update posted to the department's Facebook page.

The Duluth Police Department said tampering with city infrastructure poses a safety risk and puts an unnecessary strain on city resources.

Three other people were involved in the incident, but police said they have not yet been identified.

According to police, officers responded shortly after 10 p.m. on Aug. 1 to a report of people putting soap into the fountain at 400 Canal Park Drive.

Squads blocked off the roadway and sidewalks around the fountain and put up markings to alert the public to the hazard, police said. The city plumber was called to shut off the fountain until it could be cleaned.

The Duluth Police Department said the investigation remains active.
