CASSY COUNTY, MN — Authorities were able to free two bald eagles who were locked together and struggling to stay afloat on a northern Minnesota lake just in time for the Fourth of July.

Cass County deputies on boat and water safety patrol Monday came upon the eagles struggling in Leech Lake in Shingobee Bay, according to the sheriff’s office, which said the birds were stuck together by their wings and talons.

“The eagles were presumably fighting midair over territory and fell to the water and were struggling to stay afloat,” according to a Facebook post from the sheriff’s office.
