MN Woman Dies In Scooter Fire
An 80-year-old woman died Monday after suffering severe injuries in scooter fire in Ely.

ELY, MN — An 80-year-old woman died Monday after suffering severe injuries in a scooter fire outside of the Boundary Waters Care Center in Ely.
Emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene at 4:38 p.m. after a witness called 911 to report the fire. According to officials, the fire started while the woman was on a motorized scooter.
Witnesses stated that the woman was fully engulfed in flames before staff members were able to pull her off the scooter. She sustained critical burns and was initially transported to Ely Hospital before being airlifted to Duluth for treatment. She later succumbed to her injuries.

One staff member suffered non-life-threatening injuries during the rescue effort and was treated and released from the hospital.
The incident is under investigation by the Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s office.

“Our condolences go out to the family of the victim,” the Ely Police Department said in a statement.
