These MN Restaurants Say They Will Reopen, Regardless Of Law

It's not yet clear if Gov. Tim Walz plans to extend the Stay Home order for the third time.

MINNESOTA — Forced to stay closed since the end of March, some restaurants in Minnesota are planning to fully reopen on Monday, even if Gov. Tim Walz's Stay Home order is extended to combat the new coronavirus. The current order expires May 18.

"Well as many of you can see ALL Shady’s locations will be open May 18th at noon come hell or high water," Kris Schiffler — who runs bars in Albany, Burtrum, Cold Spring, St. Martin, New Munich, and Rice — wrote on Facebook.

Schiffler says he has the support of the Albany City Council and the local police, though he admits that Walz's authority supersedes them. He plans to reopen anyway.

"With that being said we are Americans, we have rights and we will execute those rights that our forefathers gave us. I have also contacted and will continue to reach out to bar owners and other small business...a lot of which are hair salons. We need to do this with large numbers! Open if you feel it’s safe, stop by and enjoy a cocktail and burger if you feel it’s safe. If you don’t feel safe and your sick= STAY HOME. We appreciate all the support from everyone and hope continue to Make America Great Again!"

Walz has extended the Stay Home order twice since it first went into effect in March.

Other restaurants in central Minnesota, including Rookies Sports Bar in Albany and the Side Bar and Grill in Cold Spring, also plan to open May 18.
