ST. CROIX COUNTY, WI — The 54-year-old Prior Lake, Minnesota man accused of attacking five teens tubing down a Wisconsin river — killing one of them — will stand trial starting Monday.

Nicolae Miu faces one count of first-degree intentional homicide and four counts of attempted first-degree intentional homicide in the July 30, 2022 attack at Apple River in Somerset Township.

The criminal complaint details a gruesome killing that police said was captured on video.
St. Croix County authorities were called to the river just before 4 p.m. that Saturday. At the scene, five teens were found with stab wounds in their mid-sections, authorities said.

Two of them were flown to Regions Hospital in St. Paul, while two others were taken to Regions by ambulance. The Stillwater boy was taken by ambulance to Lakeview Hospital in Stillwater, where he was pronounced dead.
Miu left the scene, presumably still armed with a knife, according to investigators. He was spotted by witnesses near an exit point for tubers on the Apple River and was taken into custody, authorities said.
The four people who survived were identified as:
- 20-year-old man from Luck, Wisconsin
- 22-year-old man from Luck, Wisconsin
- 24-year-old woman from Burnsville, Minnesota
- 22-year-old man from Elk River, Minnesota
