Lloyd E. Nerland, 67

Lloyd E. Nerland, 67, of Apple Valley, passed away on Aug. 26, 2012. Lloyd served in the US Army for 38 years and retired as a lieutenant colonel. He is preceded in death by parents, Earl and Mildred. Survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Pat; children, Michelle (Mike) Thelen, Christopher (Tara) Nerland and Jennifer (Tom) Wheeler; 10 grandchildren, Tim, Kayla and Hayley Thelen, Natalie, Sophia and Chloe Wheeler and Logan, Lauren, Ethan and Sean Nerland. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 31, at the Risen Savior Catholic Church 1501 County Road 42, Burnsville, with visitation on Thursday, Aug. 30, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the White Funeral Home, 14560 Pennock Ave., and also one hour prior to Mass at church. Interment, Fort Snelling National Cemetery at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, assembly area #4.

Lloyd Nerland was born on Dec. 27,1944, to Earl and Mildred (Reiprich) Nerland at Webster, SD. His father was in the Navy during World War II when he was born. In 1959, they moved to Huron, SD. He graduated from Huron High School in 1963. He attended Huron College in 1963 and in 1965 attended San Francisco College of Mortuary Science in San Francisco, CA. He graduated with a bachelor’s of science degree. In July of 1967, he joined the South Dakota Military Academy and retired after 38 years as lieutenant colonel. On Nov. 13, 1970, he married Patricia McLaughlin in Mason City, IA. They later moved to St. Paul and in 1975 moved to Rosemount. In 1991, they moved to Apple Valley. He retired from Sharp Electronics after more then 20 years. In April of 2012, he was inducted into the South Dakota Hall of Fame for his band Jay Bee and the Kats. He loved playing guitar.

Lloyd loved his guitar, cars, his family and his condo in Florida.

Lloyd suffered a stroke on Jan. 26, 2008 and passed away to the complications of the stroke after suffering a brain aneurysm.
