Five Questions: Rosemount Wrestler Stefan Sauer

Senior is one of five Irish wrestlers headed to the state tournament this weekend.

Stefan Sauer, the son of Tim and Candy Sauer of Rosemount, is one of five Rosemount wrestlers headed to the state tournament at the Xcel Energy Center this Friday and Saturday, where he hopes to tack a few more wins onto his 29-12 season record.

Q: Besides wrestling, what other school activities are you involved in? (other sports, fine arts, clubs, groups, etc.)
A: I am in football, wrestling and track. I am also a student ambassador.

Q: As a first-time state competitor, what part are you most looking forward to?
A: I don’t know, everything I guess. At the beginning of the season, my only goal was to make it to state, now that I am here I am excited for everything. I can't really narrow it down to one thing, if I go two-and-out I will be disappointed because I know I could have done better, but if I make it all the way to the state championship, then that would be awesome. I just want to wrestle and have fun and hopefully end some people’s dreams of being a state champ.

Q: Who was the first person you called/texted/etc. to tell you were going to state, and why were they at the top of your list?
A: I mass texted three different people: my brother Tim Sauer, Jon Bishop the heavyweight from last year, and my recruiting coach Travis Walch from St. Thomas. My brother has always been very involved with my athletics and unfortunately he was unable to be there when I wrestled but as soon as I got done talking with my parents, I texted him right away because I knew he was waiting for me to text him. And Coach Walch, because he as well has been very interested in my wrestling so he wanted me to keep him posted. And Jon and I have been good friends for along time, and he talked about going to state last year for him but he was unable to. But the weeks leading up to the section tournament, he was texting me and wishing me good luck and giving good tips and stuff like that. My parents and sister were there along with my uncle and his family so I did not have to text them.

Q: How difficult is it for you to maintain your weight during the season, and what is the one thing you're looking forward to pigging out on once the season's over?
A: Since I am a heavyweight, I don’t have to worry about weight because I lose so much sweating in practice that it has never been a problem for me. But I do try and watch what I say or do around the teammates because I try to be a nice guy and not eat while others are starving around me. But when the season is done, I might go to a couple of buffets with some of the guys on the team and enjoy eating tons of food with them.

Q: If you could go on any "reality TV" or talent show (Survivor, American Idol, Amazing Race, Real World, etc.), what show would you pick, why would you pick it and how do you think you would do?
A:
I would pick "Finding Bigfoot," because I am a big believer in Bigfoot. And I believe once I joined the team, we would find him PDQ, and because I have some good ideas that would help capture the sly hairy beast, or disprove he exists. Either way, I would help prove if he is a myth or legend.

Editor's note: Check back later this week for responses from the other Rosemount state qualifiers.
