Photos: Smiles, Tears at District 196 Area Learning Center Graduation
The Area Learning Center held its commencement on Thursday, with 18 students in attendance.
District 196's Area Learning Center, an alternative school, held its graduation on Thursday afternoon.
Eighteen students were present at the ceremony; coordinator Dave Schmitz said about 30 students met requirements for graduation this spring.
Each graduate was introduced with words of praise or an anecdote by their adviser. Then every student was given the chance to speak and say their farewell to the ALC.

Some students spoke briefly while others shared more about their lives, but for many, it was the chance to thank their parents, their teachers and their friends for pushing them to earn their diploma.
Advisers also shared with the audience the students' plans for after graduation, including everything from joining the military to going to college or for one student, deciding between cosmetology school or auto mechanic school.
