Remembering Rosemount Officer Killed In The Line Of Duty

John Francis McDermott was 27 when he was shot and killed in Rosemount.

ROSEMOUNT, MN — President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day in 1962, and the week surrounding it as National Police Week. It was established by a joint resolution of Congress, paying recognition to those who lost their lives in the line of duty.

In honor of National Police Week, Patch is remembering and paying tribute to the fallen officers of Minnesota towns and cities.

On May 21, 1923 Rosemount police officer John Francis McDermott, 27, was accidentally shot and killed by another officer after being mistaken for a suspect.

When Officer McDermott ran across a street towards where the suspects were, the officer mistook him for a suspect and opened fire, striking him in the head and chest. He was taken to a local hospital where he died the next day
