Rosemount Middle School Prepares For End Of Paper Report Cards

Parents who wish to receive a print version of their child's report card will have to specially request it.

When students at receive their report cards later this month, most of them won't be waiting for the traditional paper version. Instead, the students (and their parents) will be reading their grades online.

Rosemount Middle School (like ) is moving towards an online version of the trimester report cards, according to Vice Principal Eric Hansen. Beginning with the upcoming report cards, parents and students will be encouraged to view the cards through the middle school's SchoolView portal.

"When we sent out the first report cards last year, we also sent along a note explaining to parents that things would be changing this time around," said Hansen. "We've spent a lot of time working with our site council, teachers and students to make sure everyone is comfortable with the idea."

Rosemount Middle School is one of about 400 schools across the state that use Technology Information Education Services' SchoolView system. It offers teachers the ability to post attendance records, test results, messages to parents and other private information. Parents can also pay for school lunches, check transportation information and view attendance records. Report cards will now be included as one of the modules in Rosemount's version of the system.

Parents can still request a traditional paper version of their children's report cards, but Hansen said he doesn't expect many parents to take advantage of that option. "Nearly all of our families already use SchoolView," said Hansen. "I think that for he most part, it's an idea that is very comfortable for parents."

Sally DeSousa agrees, and said she expects that being able to view her son's card online will be much more convenient. "I pay my bills online, order pizza and even reserve movies," said DeSousa. "Frankly, it's nice to have some of the same online options when I'm dealing with my son's education."

Hansen said the school hasn't received any negative feedback about the move. In fact, he hasn't heard any complaints about the change. "I think that's a very good sign," he said.

Editor's Note: While Rosemont High School is also moving to a paperless version of their report cards, Rosemount Elementary School and are continuing to offer only paper versions of their report cards for the foreseeable future.
