The reassurance comes after a retired Rosemount librarian was accidently killed last week during a "shoot/don’t shoot" role-play scenario at a police department in Florida.

The incident happened after a live round somehow wound up inside a gun fired by an officer at the Punta Gorda Police Department’s Citizen Police Academy in Florida. The bullet fatally injured the former librarian, who was taking part in the class.

"We always make sure we never use any service weapons in our training," he said.

"We have a weapon that shoots blanks. It’s like a starter pistol. You cannot put a live round into it. The cylinder is solid at the end. It just won’t fit."

Scott said years ago officers used a training kit in which live rounds could be switched out for blanks, but the department began using guns that are unable shoot live ammunition when he heard that mistakes were made.

Discussing the death of the woman in Florida, he said "I’m kind of surprised that could happen."
