Minnesota Road Construction 2018: Full List Of Metro Projects

TWIN CITIES, MN — Pothole season is upon us, which means Minnesota's notorious road construction season is almost here. The state's long winters force construction crews to complete dozens of projects in only a few short months, causing major traffic headaches for commuters.

Here's a list of road construction projects that will impact metro drivers this year:

Highways 1 – 13

Highway 7 — Hopkins, Minnetonka and St. Louis Park

Resurfacing improvement project

Status: Work begins Spring 2018 to Fall 2018

Highway 7 — Shorewood to Minnetonka

Construct turn lanes and signal and sidewalk improvements. Install signal poles in 2018.

Construction dates: August 2017 through spring 2018

Traffic impacts: Lane closures

Highway 10 — Arden Hills

Construct a third lane on eastbound Highway 10 between I-35W and Co Rd 96

Status: Noise wall voting fall 2017; Construction begins 2018

Highways 30-39

I-35 — North Metro Split — Lino Lakes to Forest Lake

Project includes resurfacing the road and replacing bridges

Construction dates: October 2017 to October 2019

Traffic impacts: Lane and ramp closures

I-35W — Burnsville and Bloomington

Reconstruct I-35W bridge over the Minnesota River, replace pavement, add northbound lane

Status: Work begins July 2018

I-35W and County Rd I — Arden Hills, Shoreview

Build a new frontage road along the east side of I-35W between Co Rd H and Co Rd I; Construct a roundabout on Co Rd I at Rice Creek Pkwy east of I-35W. Close the ramp from Co Rd I to northbound I-35W

Construction dates: June-December 2017; work resumes in 2018

Traffic impacts: Delays, ramp and lane closures.

I- 35W and I-94 — Downtown to Crosstown

Improve transit and regional access, reconstruct bridges and pavement

Construction dates: August 2017 through fall 2021

Traffic impacts: Road, lane and ramp closures and delays

I-35W and 5th Street Bridge Repair — Minneapolis

Build a new pedestrian and bike bridge at 5th St. SE over I-35W

Construction dates: 2018

Traffic impacts: Lane closures, road closures and ramp closures

I-35W and I-94 — Minneapolis drainage tunnels

Repair drain tunnels, construct new tunnel access shaft

Construction dates: Fall 2014-Winter 2017/2018

I-35W — Minneapolis to Roseville

Resurface road between 4th St SE and County Rd C

Construction dates: July to October 2018

Traffic impacts: Five scheduled weekend road closures. Lane and ramp closures.

Highway 36, 95 — St. Croix River Crossing

Mitigation for construction of the new St. Croix River Crossing. Includes rehabilitation of the Stillwater Lift bridge, construction of the upper loop trail along Highway 95 and landscaping along Highway 95 north of the bridge and in the interchange of Highway 36 and Highway 95.

Construction dates: May 2014 to June 2019

Traffic impacts: Road closure and detour, lane closures, shoulder closures, noise impacts

Highway 36, 95 — Stillwater

Build St. Croix Crossing Upper Loop Trail, improve drainage

Construction dates: March 2018 to June 2019

Highway 36 — Stillwater Lift Bridge

Transformation into a bicycle/pedestrian crossing including repaired steel connections, restored mechanical and electrical components, repaired concrete railings, reconstructed concourse, paint and lighting replacements.

Construction dates: Aug. 2017 to June 2019

Traffic impacts: The bridge is closed to ALL traffic, but will still operate to accommodate boat navigation.

Highways 40-59

Highway 41 and Highway 169 — Scott County intersection improvements

Scott County in partnership with MnDOT is finalizing the design for a diverging diamond interchange at the Highway 169/Highway 41, and Co HHighway 78 intersection; frontage roads; and an overpass at Co Highway 14.

Status: Fall 2018 to fall 2020

Highway 47 — Minneapolis to Columbia Heights

Road resurfacing.

Status: May to July 2018

Traffic impacts: Off-peak lane closures, local road closures, sidewalk closures

Highway 47 and Highway 65 — Minneapolis (University & Central Avenues)

Reconstruct the signal systems and sidewalk ramps to comply with ADA requirements at nine intersections on Highway 47/University Ave. and Highway 65/Central Ave. (14 total between 2016 and 2017 project work)

Construction dates: Spring 2016 to fall 2018

Traffic impacts: Off-peak lane closures, local road closures, sidewalk closures

Highway 50 — Highway 3 in Farmington to Highway 52 in Hampton

Resurfacing, renew signing, upgrade ADA crossings, modify intersections and add right turn lanes

Construction dates: April through August 2018

Traffic impacts: Lane closures, detour

Highway 52 — Coates to Cannon Falls

Install Reduced Conflict Intersections

Construction dates: Summer 2017 - Spring 2018

Traffic impacts: Lane closures

Highway 55 — Inver Grove Heights

Reconstruction of Co Rd 28 and 63 at Highway 55 adding turn lanes, and permanent signal system. County-led project.

Construction dates: April 3, 2017- June 2018

Traffic impacts: Lane and road closures with detours; Note: Highway 55 will be a single lane in each direction at Argenta Trail June 21 to Oct. 13

Highway 55 — Rockford to Theodore Wirth Pkwy

Safety improvements including culvert replacement, tree removal, curb and gutter replacement and guardrail replacement.

Status: Construction begins Spring 2018

Renaming Highway 55, Highway 110 in Inver Grove Heights to Highway 62 in Mendota Heights

Renaming the stretch of highway between I-494 and Hiawatha Ave. to Highway 62: Highway 55 between Hiawatha and Highway 13 will be dual signed with Highway 62. Highway 110 between Highway 13 and I-494 will be renamed to Highway 62.

Status: Signing begins July 2018

Highways 60-79

Highway 62 and Highway 212 — Eden Prairie and Edina

Resurface the Highway and move the pedestrian crossings at Beach Rd. from the east to the west of the intersection.

Status: Work begins summer 2018.

Renaming Highway 55, Highway 110 to Highway 62

Renaming the stretch of highway between I-494 and Hiawatha Ave. to Highway 62: Highway 55 between Hiawatha and Highway 13 will be dual signed with Highway 62. Highway 110 between Highway 13 and I-494 will be renamed to Highway 62.

Status: Signing begins July 2018

Highway 65 — Blaine

Install new signal system at the intersection of Highway 65 and 105th Ave. NE and ADA Accessibility improvements

Status: Preliminary work began mid-September 2017. Construction begins spring 2018.

Traffic impacts: Short-term lane closures. No closures during tournaments at the Natl. Sports Center

Highway 65 — Blaine, Ham Lake and East Bethel

Construction of Reduced Conflict Intersections along Highway 65 from north of Bunker Lake Blvd to 245 Ave. N. Lengthen left turn lanes at intersections between 85th Ave., Blaine and Sims Rd., East Bethel

Status: Work begins in 2018

Highway 65 and Highway 47 — Minneapolis (University & Central Avenues)

Reconstruct the signal systems and sidewalk ramps to comply with ADA requirements at nine intersections on Highway 47/University Ave. and Highway 65/Central Ave. (14 total between 2016 and 2017 project work)

Construction dates: Spring 2016 to fall 2018

Traffic impacts: Off-peak lane closures, local road closures, sidewalk closures

Highway 77 — Eagan (Diffley Rd)

Replace bridge joints on Diffley Road spanning Highway 77

Status: 2018

Traffic Impacts: Lane closures and possible ramp closures

Highways 80-99

I-94 — Minneapolis noise wall replacement

Replace noise wall on I-94 from Cedar Ave. to the Mississippi River

Construction dates: Mid-November 2017 to fall 2018

Traffic impacts: Crews will begin work in mid-November 2017, but will work away from traffic. Beginning spring 2018: ramp closures.

I-94 — Minneapolis to Brooklyn Center

Resurface road, repair bridges on or over I-94, reconstruct westbound I-94 bridge deck over Highway 252, and repair Lowry and Portland Avenue tunnels.

Construction dates: Spring 2017 through summer 2018

Traffic impacts: road, lane and ramp closures - delays

I-94 — St. Paul to Maplewood

Resurface road, construct auxiliary lane and emergency pull-offs, build noisewall and replace part of an existing noisewall, repair bridges.

Construction dates: Spring 2016 to late fall 2017; minor wrap-up work in spring 2018
Traffic impacts: Lane closures, delays

I-94 and I-35W — Downtown to Crosstown

Improve transit and regional access, reconstruct bridges and pavement

Construction dates: August 2017 through fall 2021

Traffic impacts: Lane and ramp closures

I-94 and I-35W — Minneapolis drainage tunnels

Repair drain tunnels, construct new tunnel access shaft

Construction dates: Fall 2014-Winter 2017/2018

Traffic impacts: Delays, lane closures at staging area

Highway 95 and Manning Avenue — Washington County safety improvements

Widening shoulders, resurface road, add turn lanes and update drainage.

Construction dates: Early July 2017 through late fall 2019; 2017 project work complete

Traffic impacts: Closures, detours

Highway 95, 36 — St. Croix River Crossing

Mitigation for construction of the new St. Croix River Crossing. Includes rehabilitation of the Stillwater Lift bridge, construction of the upper loop trail along Highway 95 and landscaping along Highway 95 north of the bridge and in the interchange of Highway 36 and Highway 95.

Reconstruct existing bypass lane shoulder, widening for a new shoulder, resurface existing pavement and upgrade drainage.

Construction dates: Late Aug. through early Nov. 2017; Minor wrap-up in spring 2018
Traffic impacts: Off-peak lane closures

Highways 100-199

Renaming Highway 55, Highway 110 to Highway 62

Renaming the stretch of highway between I-494 and Hiawatha Ave. to Highway 62: Highway 55 between Hiawatha and Highway 13 will be dual signed with Highway 62. Highway 110 between Highway 13 and I-494 will be renamed to Highway 62.

Status: Signing begins July 2018

Highway 149 High Bridge (Smith Avenue and Dodd Road) — St. Paul to Mendota Heights

Resurface the road, reconstruct the driving surface of the High Bridge, construct turn lane, replace signals and improve drainage

Construction dates: September 2017 to December 2018

Highway 169 — Belle Plaine to Jordan

Resurface and repair concrete pavement, install cable median barrier and construct Reduced Conflict Intersection (RCI)

Construction dates: Spring through fall 2018

Traffic impacts: Lane and intersection closures with detours

Highway 169 — Champlin

Replace bridges on Highway 169 at Elm Creek, resurface highway between Highway 610 and E Hayden Lake Rd

Construction dates: Fall 2017 through fall 2018

Traffic impacts: Lane closures controlled by signals or flaggers

Highways 200-299

Highway 252 and 70th Avenue N — Brooklyn Center

Reconstruct 70th Ave. between Highway 252 and Dupont Ave. N

Construction dates: August 28 through October 2017; minor wrap-up work in spring 2018.

Traffic impacts: 70th Ave. closed and detoured west of Highway 252

Highways 300-694

I-494 — Inver Grove Heights and South St. Paul

Bridge deck resurfacing and auxiliary lane addition

Status: Fall 2018 through fall 2019

I-494 and East Bush Lake Road — Bloomington

Construct ramp to westbound I-494; reconstruct ramp to eastbound I-494 and modify signals

Construction dates: Mid-October 2017 to Fall 2018

Traffic impacts: Lane closures
