TWIN CITIES, MN — Drivers in the Twin Cities metro may want to check their routes before heading out this weekend, with several major MnDOT closures either starting Friday night or already in place.
I-35W Closure In Burnsville
Interstate 35W will close in both directions between I-494 and the I-35E/I-35W split in Burnsville from 9 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
All ramps on I-35W between I-494 and the I-35/I-35E/I-35W split will also be closed.
MnDOT said the closure will allow crews to remove the eastbound Highway 13 bridge, patch northbound I-35W and prepare for traffic shifts.
Drivers can use I-35, I-35E, Highway 77 and I-494 as alternate routes.
Highway 12 Closure In Wayzata, Minnetonka
Highway 12 will close in both directions between Central Avenue in Wayzata and I-494 in Minnetonka from 10 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday.
The same stretch is scheduled to close again the following weekend, May 8-11.
MnDOT said the Highway 12 closures will allow crews to make drainage repairs and repair and resurface the road.
The posted detour will use I-494, Highway 55 and County Road 101.
Highway 280 Closure In St. Paul, Roseville
Meanwhile, Highway 280 is already closed in both directions between I-94 in St. Paul and Highway 36/I-35W in Roseville as part of a major construction project.
MnDOT said the highway is expected to remain closed through late August, before reopening ahead of the 2026 Minnesota State Fair.
During the Highway 280 closure, through traffic will be directed to regional detours using I-35W or I-94, Highway 36 and I-35E.
MnDOT said drivers should expect more traffic on nearby streets such as Cleveland, Raymond and Snelling avenues.
