Burnsville, MN, Nov. 7, 2012— Juan Falcon, Burnsville resident and pancreatic cancer survivor, was one of a group of residents celebrating as Mayor Kautz proclaimed November as National Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month at Monday's city council meeting. "Tonight is a step towards bringing attention to this deadly disease in the hopes that more will know the urgent need for more research funding for early detection tools and effective treatment options for patents," explains Nancy Marian, Burnsville resident whose family has been affected by pancreatic cancer.
"Each November, volunteers with the Twin Cities Affiliate of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network raise their voices, share their personal stories and build awareness about pancreatic cancer. Through these efforts we hope to educate the community about the urgency of this expanding movement to know, fight and end pancreatic cancer,” stated Brenda Coleman Coordinator.

Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the United States. Despite improved survival rates for many other forms of cancer, pancreatic cancer remains the only major cancer that still has a five-year relative survival rate in the single digits at six percent. The incidence and death rate for pancreatic cancer are increasing, and pancreatic cancer is anticipated to move from the fourth to the second leading cause of cancer death in the U.S. by 2020, and possibly as early 2015.
