Burnsville Math Educator Among Teacher Of Year Contenders

John Glas, a math teacher at Nicollet Middle School in Burnsville, is one of 37 semifinalists in the 53rd annual Minnesota Teacher of the Year recognition sponsored by Education Minnesota.

From that group, about 10 finalists will be named in late March.

Glas uses an “active classroom” approach that engages his students in movement while also engaging them with rigorous content, according to a news release. It’s an approach that has proven successful and illustrates his insights into learning.

He creates an energetic atmosphere in his classroom that has a positive effect and boosts the success of all students.

His enthusiasm for learning and teaching inspires students to get involved in their own education and learn new things every day, according to a parent.

He works hard and expects his students to do the same. His high expectations and dedication to student success are evident to students, parents and colleagues.

Glas is a community builder who organizes students and families to clean up the school grounds and boost the curb appeal of their school.

All Teacher of the Year candidates are invited to the Minnesota Teacher of the Year recognition banquet on Sunday, May 7, in Bloomington.

At that time, all of this year’s Teacher of the Year candidates will be honored and the selection for the 2017 Minnesota Teacher of the Year will be announced.

Last year, when he was a sixth-grade teacher at Edward Neill Elementary, Glas was among five teachers to be selected for the first Community of Excellence employee awards in District 191.
