Contentious GOP Race in MN CD2 Will Be Decided Tuesday

Former conservative talk show host Jason Lewis is in a competitive race against businesswoman Darlene Miller for the Republican nomination.

On Tuesday, voters in Minnesota’s 2nd Congressional District will choose among four Republican candidates to replace retiring GOP Rep. John Kline, who has held the seat for 14 years but is not seeking reelection.

The district covers the south Twin Cities metro area, including Dakota, Goodhue, Scott, Wabasha and parts of Rice and Washington counties. The winner of Tuesday's primary will go on to face Democrat Angie Craig in the general election.

According to the Star Tribune, Craig already has a large advantage over her GOP rivals in fundraising and time spent on the campaign trail. Meanwhile, GOP front-runners Jason Lewis and Darlene Miller have criticized each other over the economy, foreign policy and who has to best chance to win in November.

Miller, President and CEO of Permac Industries, has worked to portray Lewis, a former conservative talk show host, as unstable. She's touted her business experience and an endorsement from incumbent Kline, who said "Darlene is the only one I trust to represent us in Congress," in a recent commercial.

Lewis won the Republican Party's endorsement at the district convention, and has the support of the party's volunteers. He says if elected, he will put conservative principals before his party or caucus.

Former Republican state legislator John Howe and business consultant Matt Erickson, who's positioned himself as candidate in the mold of Donald Trump, are also in the race.

Polls open for the primary election at regular polling places Tuesday from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
