Coronavirus: Minnesota Department Of Health Shopping Guidelines

Here are tips on how to shop for groceries and other essentials from the Minnesota Department of Health.

MINNESOTA — During the state's "Stay Home" order, which lasts until May 4, Minnesotans are allowed to make essential trips to the grocery store. Health officials have provided guidelines for keeping yourself and others safe while shopping during the new coronavirus crisis.

Find the tips from Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) below:

  • Plan ahead so you can spend as little time at the store as possible
  • Be quick to limit interactions in public
  • Go alone, if possible
  • Wash or sanitize hands to kill germs
    • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60 percent alcohol.
  • Clean the cart handle
  • Stay at least 6 feet from others
  • Consider getting a two-week supply of medications, food, and other essentials to keep at home.
    • Get food delivered, if possible
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, and throw used tissues into the trash. Or cough or sneeze into your arm or elbow
  • People who are sick should still stay home

According to the MDH, wearing a mask does not protect you from others who may spread the virus. However, masks or cloth face coverings can help with preventing your germs from infecting others.

The Centers for Disease Control recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public settings such as grocery stores and pharmacies.

Don’t buy or wear surgical or N95 masks, says the MDH. "These supplies are in high need in health care facilities to protect health care workers."

Health officials say face coverings should not be placed on young children under age 2, anyone who has trouble breathing, or anyone who is unable to remove the mask without assistance.
