Police Chase Ends in Burnsville Crash Killing Two

Both the motorist fleeing police and one innocent bystander were killed in the crash in Burnsville, authorities say.

Investigators say that two people died in a crash in Burnsville Monday night. The Minnesota State Patrol said a vehicle fleeing from Apple Valley and Burnsville police was involved in a fatal crash on County Road 5 in Burnsville.

The events that led to the deadly crash began in Savage when the driver of a Chevy Astro van struck another vehicle and fled the scene, according to KARE 11.

The victim of the crash called 911 and gave a detailed description of the van.

Minutes later, an Apple Valley Police officer saw a motorist driving dangerously and learned that the van had been involved in the recent Savage hit-and-run.

KSTP reported that officers began chasing the suspect in Apple Valley shortly before 8:30 p.m. Monday before the motorist then hit another car on County Road 5 at Williams Drive in Burnsville.

Both the fleeing driver and another motorist were killed, authorities say.

When asked if the fatal crash would have occurred if officers had terminated the pursuit earlier, Apple Valley Police Chief Jon Rechtzigel, "I can't offer an opinion on that right now."
