Duluth council to set maximum 2027 property tax levy (northernnewsnow.com) — Duluth homeowners and renters should watch closely as the City Council sets the maximum 2027 property tax levy, capping how high next year's taxes can go. Mayor Roger Reinert has proposed a 3.6% increase, and councilors must lock in the ceiling by the end of September before finalizing the full budget in December.
2. Denfeld celebrates 100 years with opening of time capsule (duluthnewstribune.com) — Denfeld High School's 100th birthday drew generations of Duluth students and neighbors to see a long-hidden time capsule opened from the school's 1920s cornerstone. Inside were yearbooks, newspapers, coins, and school records that captured a vivid snapshot of Duluth's past, giving today's west Duluth community a tangible link to its history and pride.
3. Data Centers, NDAs Draw Focus at Duluth Forum (wdio.com) — Duluth-area readers heard St. Louis County District 1 candidates debate data centers, transparency, and economic development at a forum hosted by the Duluth Area Chamber and Duluth News Tribune. Incumbent Annie Harala defended signing a data-center NDA as legal, while challenger Kris Eilers pushed for more openness and even a moratorium on data centers, highlighting differing visions for regional growth.
4. Hauschild, Zupancich square off in debate ahead of midterms (northernnewsnow.com) — A Duluth debate put state Sen. Grant Hauschild and challenger Andrea Zupancich on stage to spar over tariffs, mining, rural health care, and jobs in northeast Minnesota. Hosted by the Duluth News Tribune and Duluth Area Chamber, the forum highlighted how November's District 3 race could shape local hospitals, housing, and employment from Duluth across the Arrowhead.
5. Minnesota awards $300K in Northland grants to boost local food access (northernnewsnow.com) — From Duluth, state agriculture officials announced more than $300,000 in new "Farm to Food Security" grants for Northland projects, part of a $1.2 million statewide effort. The funding is meant to make it easier for Duluth-area residents and neighbors to buy fresh, local food, strengthening both small producers and community food access.
