Halverson Opposed to Pay Increase for Legislators

Rep. Laurie Halverson writes about her opposition to a pay increase for state legislators

In the last few weeks there has been a discussion in the Minnesota State Senate of increasing salaries for state legislators. I oppose any pay raise for legislators, and the Minnesota House has not put a similar proposal forward.

The legislature needs to get its own house in order before we begin to consider pay raises. As we work to ensure the economy continues to recover from the impact of the recession, we have much higher priorities to deal with than our pay. The work of the people needs to be the top priority and that means passing a responsible budget without gimmicks or shifts that put our prosperity at risk.

We also need to listen to the call of our constituents and find ways to demonstrate true leadership by finding ways to work together across the aisle for the common good. In addition, we are still technically a part time legislature, and our pay should reflect this fact.

There may be an appropriate time to discuss legislators' compensation, but it is certainly not now.
