Sensitive aquifer

Pipeline history shows a spill is very likely if the pipe is installed. Despite gestures by proponents, the deal would not be good for the environment nor the public.

Continued demand for gasoline has some south metro residents noting the recent U.S. Senate approval of the Keystone XL pipeline through the central U.S. over White House objections.  Some say re-routing the pipeline around Ogallala, Nebraska answered objections about the Ogallala Aquifer, an underground body of clean water in the region.

This aquifer actually lies under large parts of the Great Plains, from Texas to South Dakota. According to Wikipedia and other sources, it supplies most drinking water and irrigation for these states.  Pipeline history shows a spill is very likely if the pipe is installed. Damage to groundwater would not be limited to the area immediately below the spill, due to the fluid aquifer.

Most jobs would be temporary, and the U.S. would see little of the oil produced.  Despite gestures by proponents, the deal would not be good for the environment nor the public.  Let's thank Senators Klobuchar and Franken for their votes against it.
