The American Red Cross urges eligible donors to schedule an appointment now to give blood or platelets and help prevent summer shortages.
o Patients don’t get a summer holiday or vacation from needing blood and platelets.
o During the summer months of June, July and August, on average, about two fewer donors schedule an appointment to give blood at each Red Cross blood drive than what patients need. This can add up to more than 100,000 fewer donations during the summer.
o This seasonal challenge can be overcome if just two people above what’s expected at each drive give blood this summer.
o The Red Cross must collect 15,000 blood donations every day to meet the needs of patients at approximately 2,600 hospitals and transfusion centers across the country.
