Is Fear of the Dentist Affecting Your Health?

Your oral health plays an important role in your overall health. Seeing your dentist twice a year for regular checkups and cleanings is important to maintain good oral hygiene. Unfortunately, many people avoid these routine visits out of a common fear of the dentist. The good news is that sedation dentistry can help fearful or anxious patients.

A recent survey from the American Association of Endodontists found fear of the dentist affects more than 80 percent of American adults, and more than half say fear may keep them from going to see the dentist. For those people, it’s important to understand the impact of good oral health and how to have a more relaxing experience.

Oral hygiene’s impact on overall health

Many people associate poor oral health with cavities and bad breath. However, consider the mouth is a gateway to the rest of your body. Bacteria in your mouth can spread to other areas of the body and can contribute to heart disease, stroke and other health conditions. Brushing and flossing daily, along with regular visits to the dentist play an important role in keeping your mouth fresh and clean, and your body healthy.

Sedation dentistry for anxious patients

Conscious sedation uses a medication to help create a relaxed state of mind and can be beneficial to patients who might otherwise avoid the dentist. Sedation dentistry may be right for you if:

  •  You are anxious or nervous about visiting the dentist.
  •  You have a severe gag response.
  •  Your body is resistant to local anesthesia.
  •  You need many procedures done in fewer visits.
Conscious sedation is safe and can be easily administered by either nitrous oxide gas (laughing gas) or anti-anxiety medication. These medications can help you relax and in many cases forget about the treatment received. A fear of the dentist shouldn't prevent you from taking care of the health of your mouth and body.

Talk with your dentist to determine the best approach to make your dental visits comfortable and to keep your smile healthy.
