Author Sally Howell Johnson will be talking about her book, “The Practicing Life: Simple Acts. Sacred Living,” as a kickoff to the Lenten season at Advent United Methodist Church, 3945 Lexington Ave. S, on Thurs., Feb. 12, 7pm. All are invited to this free event. “Sally’s book and presentation are a reminder that we all need to take a step back and refocus,” said Stephanie Clark, chair of Advent UMC’s Adult Faith Team. “And what better time to do that than during Lent?”

“The Practicing Life: Simple Acts. Sacred Living” offers insight and inspiration for a connection of mind, body, spirit. This is a practice that can bring joy, peace, and an attention to the sacred in the everyday. Johnson is the Minister of Worship and Spiritual Formation at Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church. She also wrote “Barefoot Zone: Walking the Spiritual Path.”

“We live our lives at speeds that keep us from noticing and embracing the movement of the Sacred in the midst of the whirlwind,” Johnson writes.

Johnson’s book is a perfect kickoff to the Lenten season at Advent UMC where Pastor Rory Swenson will be preaching on “Stumbling Blocks to Stepping Stones,” taking inventory of the obstacles in our spiritual lives. Through faith and spiritual practices, those obstacles can be transformed into ways to seek a deeper, more meaningful relationship with Christ.
