Newsflash: Eden Prairie Isn’t Raking in the Dough From Speeding Tickets

State law bars agencies from setting ticket quotas, and most of the money doesn't come back to the community that issued the ticket.

Speeding has been a big topic of conversation in recent months—from stepped up enforcement during “speed week” to news that Eden Prairie ranks 15th in the metro in speeding tickets issued per capita.

That prompted allegations that local agencies only enforce speeding to raise money. Not so, according to a Tuesday Eden Prairie Police Department blog post.

State law bans agencies from setting speeding ticket quotas for officers, and most of the money doesn’t go to the city where the ticket was issued.

In 2012, Eden Prairie received $600,076 from tickets—just 1.6 percent of the $38.3 million general fund budget for that year.
