Police Ask Volunteers to Halt Planned Water Search for Mandy Matula

They warn that the Mississippi is dangerous right now.

Authorities are asking organizers to cancel volunteer-led water searches for Mandy Matula planned for this weekend.

Information was posted on the “Minnesota United" and "Finding Mandy Matula” Facebook pages about a search Sunday near St. Cloud. Both sites had a message that included this information:

We will need to be on boats and here is what we are looking for;

10-15 BOATS!!!- NO KAYAKS, JET SKIIS, PONTOONS, CANOES, HOVER CRAFTS, OR DUCK PADDLE BOATS, ETC......

We are looking to have 4-6 people inside the boat
lifejackets, ropes, and anchors inside the boat.

We are also looking for 4-6 underwater cameras or fish finders. If you have something along those lines, and it works..fantastic please bring it.

That prompted Eden Prairie to send out a release warning people about the dangers of water searches. The announcement noted that water levels are high on the Mississippi and the current is running fast.

“Any small mistake in these conditions can quickly turn into a water emergency that could result in injury or death,” the warning stated. “The Eden Prairie Police Department is working closely with multiple law enforcement agencies from throughout the state to conduct searches by land, air and water in targeted areas surrounding Eden Prairie and northward along the Mississippi River toward Stearns County. Public safety water patrols are searching the Mississippi River as part of this investigation on a daily basis, and residents along the river are aware of the situation.”

Shortly after Eden Prairie sent out its release, a user on the Finding Mandy Matula page linked to the warning. Josh Truax, the original poster, responded:

We are aware. I spoke with eppd and they shared concern of the situation and we are working together for a solution

Matula, 24, has been missing since the night of May 1.
