Stratasys Printer to Aid Designers in U’s New Medical Devices Center
The Eden Prairie company's allows designers to print models developed in computer-aided-design programs.

A 3-D printer from Eden Prairie-based Stratasys Ltd. is helping to make a University of Minnesota Medical Devices Center that opened Monday in Minneapolis into one of the premier facilities in the industry.
The Medical Device Center aims to make the University of Minnesota a focal point of the medical devices design. In a Tuesday article, the Star Tribune wrote:
“Once criticized for taking too long to get products to market, the U will use the center to connect with corporate partners, engineers and scientists from around the world. In fact, the center will be used by 100 students and serve as a think tank for eight full-time ‘innovation fellows.’”Stratasys, the second oldest company in 3D printing, started in 1989.
Engineers have for many years used computer-aided-design (CAD) programs to help them design products. With the introduction of 3D printers, engineers can send their designs from a CAD to the printer, giving them prototypes of products as common as a stapler or as high tech as an aircraft engine.
