California Dreamin'

It’s that time of year when the Southern states start sounding pretty good. Tropical breezes and deck chairs by the pool seem like a pretty good trade for brown leaves and grey skies.

I’ve never heard anyone say that they didn’t like this song. Listen closely to the many layers of harmony that monopolize this overproduced masterpiece and see if you can pick out some of the buried voicies that you hadn’t noticed on prior listening sessions.

Lou Adler, the head of Dunhill Records made a very insightful choice when he signed these creative folks to the label in 1964. There’s a reason that this song is #89 in Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. Good design takes time, but the fruits of a good design are timeless. That’s a lesson you should have learned from your Mamas and Papas.
