At the May 7 work session, the City Council of Columbia Heights will be discussing whether to allow chickens in Columbia Heights. Β Columbia Heights currently has no specific ordinance regulating the raising of chickens. Β There are several families that already raise chickens throughout the city. Β The current city's noise ordinance would probably prohibit a rooster. Β
Minneapolis requires a permit, getting permission from neighbors within 100 feet and an inspection from the city. Β St. Paul requires an annual permit and permission of neighbors within 150 feet and no roosters. Β Fridley requires an annual license and a written plan on how you meet the city ordinance. Β
The current Columbia Heights ordinance allows for only two adult pets per household. Β Since chickens are flock animals they need 3-4 for them to do well.

What do you think? Β Should Columbia Heights have an ordinance regarding chickens?
