At the May 7 work session, the City Council of Columbia Heights will be discussing whether to allow chickens in Columbia Heights. Columbia Heights currently has no specific ordinance regulating the raising of chickens. There are several families that already raise chickens throughout the city. The current city's noise ordinance would probably prohibit a rooster.
Minneapolis requires a permit, getting permission from neighbors within 100 feet and an inspection from the city. St. Paul requires an annual permit and permission of neighbors within 150 feet and no roosters. Fridley requires an annual license and a written plan on how you meet the city ordinance.
The current Columbia Heights ordinance allows for only two adult pets per household. Since chickens are flock animals they need 3-4 for them to do well.
