Feds Charge Fridley Felon with Having Ammo

Federal law says felons can't carry bullets. So a Fridley man who police say was carrying 9-millimeter ammunition during a Jan. 31, 2013 traffic stop now faces as many as 10 years in prison.

Raphael Eric Matthews, 22, was the passenger when police stopped the vehicle for a traffic violation, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney for Minnesota. Police found the ammunition "on his person," according to the release.

Matthews' criminal record includes a 2007 conviction for aggravated robbery and a 2012 conviction for simple robbery, both in Hennepin County.

Agencies investigating the Jan. 31 case were the Minneapolis Police Department and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
