UPDATED: Fridley Fire Aids with Hazmat Mishap at Nearby Water Plant

Original post: A month after Fridley firefighters responded to a , the department responded to a chlorine leak at a Coon Rapids plant Monday morning. 

The North Suburban Hazardous Material Team was activated for the incident.

"Captain Kim Herrmann filled the role of Science Officer looking up chemical information," Fridley Fire Chief John Berg said in an email Monday afternoon. "Kim is the only member of the North Suburban Hazardous Material Team from Fridley."

About two pounds of chlorine escaped the Dogwood Street water treatment plant, according to a Coon Rapids official cited by the Coon Rapids Herald. That's a small amount, Utilities Operations Supervisor Rick Bednar told the Herald.

Acting Captain Jim Ktytor told Twin Cities Fire Wire that levels of chlorine inside the water-treatment building reached 24 parts per million.

The incident was under control by 7 a.m., Twin Cities Fire Wire reported.

On Feb. 14, Fridley firefighters assisted with a chemical accident at the City of Minneapolis Water Works facility in Columbia Heights. In that incident, , creating a heated reaction inside the building.
