Most individual 401(k) investors log into their plan.
Review the mutual fund investment options.
And assume they are looking at the complete menu.
If a plan displays 20 to 30 mutual fund options.
Most people view those funds as their entire 401(k) universe.
In some 401(k) plans the default mutual fund options.
Are not the only options available.
Look for the SDBA (self-directed brokerage account).
A brokerage account inside your existing 401(k) account.
Provides access to more mutual funds, stocks, and ETFs.
You 401(k) might have the SDBA option.
But are not aware it exists.
Don't assume the visible mutual fund menu.
Is all your 401(k) plan has to offer.
Instead of asking only:
"Which 401(k) mutual fund should I choose?"
Consider asking a different question:
"Am I making decisions from all my 401(k) options?"
That question changes the starting point.
In your 401(k) investment management process.
Shift attention away from immediate mutual fund selection.
Understand the range of available investment choices first.
