Two Robbinsdale Area Elementary Schools Headed to Destination ImagiNation© Global Tournament

Neill and Lakeview Elementary schools are headed to the Destination ImagiNation© Global Tournament.

The Neill Ostriches are no strangers to large-scale competitions. With their second place finish in the Wind Visible Category at the 2013 Minnesota Destination ImagiNation© (DI) State Tournament, the team once again sealed their place at the upcoming Global Tournament, which will be held in May in Knoxville, Tennessee. Their coach, Neill Elementary teacher Ken Strand, summed up their success while speaking to the essence of the program. “I think the kids did a wonderful job interpreting a very challenging problem,” he said.  “They needed to do a lot of research into wind energy, and also design a piece of kinetic art. I am really proud of their hard work.”

But the Ostriches are not alone. The team from Lakeview Elementary School, Dangerous Pie, is heading to Globals as well. Barry Thorvilson, the coach, has been the DI coach at Lakeview for over twenty years. This will be Thorvilson’s first team to advance to the Global competition, coaching Dangerous Pie in the In Disguises category to a second place finish at the state level.
