Breck Bounces Back, Wins Third Place Game

The Mustangs used two third-period goals to defeat Eveleth-Gilbert 6-4 on Saturday in St. Paul

The girls hockey team finished its season with a win Saturday, defeating Eveleth-Gilbert 6-4 in the Class A third place game at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

The Mustangs finished the state tournament 2-1, defeating New Ulm before losing to South St. Paul in the state semifinal on Friday.

Breck used three first period goals to steal early momentum Saturday, with a goal by Milica McMillen and two scores by Prentice Basten.

In the second, Kayla Mork notched a shorthanded goal at the 14:34 mark to make the score 4-1, but Eveleth-Gilbert stormed back.

The Bears scored two goals in the final minute of the second and one more 33 seconds into the third to tie the game at 4-4. Breck (18-12-1) answered back with a goal by McMillen 1:12 later to regain the lead, and Carly Schaeder notched an insurance goal with six minutes left to put the game out of reach.
